Freedom from Artificality

Kuei-shan asked Yun-yen,
“What is the seat of enlightenment?”
Yun-yen said,
“Freedom from artificiality.”

Kuei-shan (771-854)

This was the Daily Zen today and it got me thinking.

Just what is artificial in a reality where the only world we perceive is the one our mind's construct? Do we have anyway of determining what is 'real' for ourselves? Science would most likely be most folks' answer. If we can prove it exists as a fact then it must exist, right? But all these theories, proofs and facts are still a construction of the limited human mind. So how can one avoid attachment to what is false practically every day? Is it to avoid feeding into your own perceived world's artificality?

Silly zen masters... why don't they include step by step instructions to enlightenment. I'm gonna go stare at some grass now and try to figure out if its real.
